5 new GRAMMY Awards categories for 2027
The Recording Academy is adding five categories for the 2027 awards.
1. Best Asian Pop Music Performance
This new category recognizes Asian pop performances originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop, and C-Pop. Eligible recordings must meaningfully use one or more Asian languages. Notably, the category is based on the music itself, not the nationality or ethnicity of the performer.
2. Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance
This new category recognizes contemporary R&B performed by established duos and groups, as well as collaborations between solo artists, duos, and groups. (At the same time, the existing Best R&B Performance category will become Best R&B Solo Performance).
3. Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance
This category recognizes singles and tracks rooted in traditional styles of pop vocal performance that don’t neatly fit within the contemporary pop style. The award goes to the performing artist(s).
4. Best Traditional Folk Album
This category is a breakout from the previous Best Folk Album category (which will be renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album) to recognize releases in the traditional style. The award recognizes the performing artist(s), as well as producers, engineers/mixers, and songwriters of new material whose contributions make up more than 50% of the album’s playing time.
5. Best Latin Song
This new category recognizes newly written Latin songs with lyrics that are predominantly in Spanish (at least 51% of the lyrics). Unlike a performance category, this award is given to the songwriter or songwriters of the new material.
Definition, eligibility, and criteria updates
The Recording Academy also announced a few modifications to existing awards and eligibility criteria to adequately reflect the current state of the industry.
Album Eligibility
The threshold for an album to qualify as “new” has been lowered from 75 percent to 66 percent new recordings, helping ensure that albums widely recognized by the music industry as new are not excluded.

Best New Artist
The Recording Academy has updated the “Best New Artist” eligibility rules to better reflect when an artist has their breakthrough moment. Artists can be submitted for the category up to four times, rather than three, giving artists more opportunities to qualify as their careers grow.

Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album
Internet-only releases can now qualify for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album as long as the release includes album notes and additional materials as part of the commercial download.
It’s a small rule change, but a major step in recognizing that physical album packaging is no longer the only way artists and labels present supplemental material alongside a release.
Songwriters and Composers Recognition Expansion
Songwriters and composers of award-winning material in most genre album categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and Achievement Certificates in parity with the recognition currently given to producers and engineers.
