The DIY Touring Mentality: Advice from Martin Atkins

Last week, I posted a video clip of Portia Sabin (chief honcho of Kill Rock Stars) talking about the importance of touring for young indie bands. Most labels are reluctant to sign any band that hasn’t logged tens of thousands of miles on the road.

If you’re just starting to wrap your head around this whole touring thing, it can seem pretty overwhelming: booking, driving, playing the gigs, printing up guest lists, doing promo work, performing in-stores and in-studios, networking, partying, sleeping an hour or two, driving again.

In the video above, CD Baby president Brian Felsen talks with Martin Atkins (Public Image Ltd, Ministry, Pigface, and Killing Joke) about how an artist can have a successful DIY tour by taking it one step at a time.

Hopefully Atkins’ advice will help you adopt the right mentality for touring!

How’ve you juggled all the busy-work and fun of life on the road? Let us know in the comments section below.
