Advice to Young Bands: Tour, Tour, Tour!

Elliott Smith. The Decemberists. Gossip. Sleater-Kinney. Quasi. The Thermals.

And those are just a few of the wicked awesome artists that Portland-via-Olympia record label Kill Rock Stars has helped over the years.

CD Baby president Brian Felsen recently interviewed Portia Sabin, president of Kill Rock Stars. Portia began working at KRS in 2000 and started her own artist management company, Shotclock Management, in 2001. From 2005 through 2008, Portia managed dance/punk band The Gossip. In 2011-12 she chaired the organizing committee of the inaugural Libera Awards, an awards show celebrating independent labels and artists.

In this clip, Sabin encourages new bands to hit the road and tour, tour, tour. Bands with touring experience are significantly more appealing to labels as it shows a level of commitment to the lifestyle, the hard work, and the sacrifice of pursuing a professional music career — as well as a proficiency for managing the many facets of such a career.
