About 7 or 8 years ago one of my “songs” was used in an AMC commercial and it changed the whole way I thought about sync licensing.

I put songs in quotes because the track the producers used was the LAST song I ever thought would be licensed. It’s basically just a bunch of field recordings, feedback, and spoken word nonsense.

Of all the things I’ve labored over for seemingly endless hours, writing and recording, I made this track in about 30 minutes, pretty much as a joke. But apparently it was perfect for the commercial — and so I received a hefty payment, thank you very much, and a good lesson in how sync licensing ain’t always what it seems.

  • The sync license is what that show’s producers would pay you in order to “synchronize” your music with their footage. It’s an upfront fee (both for the song and the recording — one to the publisher, one to the label; are you both?). THEN once the show is airing on TV you can generate performance royalties that will be collected and distributed via ASCAP (or CD Baby Pro, if you use us for publishing administration).

  • Hi Dan,

    Currently our sync program includes YouTube and there isn’t a way to opt out of that micro-sync portion of the program. Maybe in the future.

    I’ve been signed up for licensing,and so far it’s rubbish,I’ve waited for a long time
    with no results. I would recommend a good agent to flush out a deal,you’ll
    be better off.
