DIY Networking Tip: Give the Sound Engineer a Gift, and other tales of nice-ness

beer lovers basket 2011 DIY Networking Tip: Give the Sound Engineer a Gift, and other tales of nice nessI know, I know. I can hear you protesting already, saying, “Don’t we DIY musicians have ENOUGH to do already without worrying about getting people gifts!?”

But think about it– you’re but one fish in a big sea of music-makers; one band out of twenty that Mr. or Mrs. Sound Engineer, Mr. or Mrs. Booking Agent, Mr. or Mrs. Music Critic will work with THIS WEEK ALONE!

So make an impression. Spread some positive vibes and leave a little unique gift for the other music industry professionals you work with.

Put a XMAS bow on top of a beer can (full!) and give it to the sound person before your show. Leave a Reeses’ Peanut Butter Cup pack (uneaten!) with a personalized note for the booking agent. Send the music editor at your local rag a card with a scratch-it ticket inside (unscratched!).

I guarantee you’ll increase your chances of having an attentive sound person, an appreciative booking agent, or another reviewer on your side.

It’s simple, and you don’t have to spend more than a dollar or two per person! Try it.

And for anyone that is mean to you or screws you over, you can leave them an entirely different kind of gift. (But I didn’t tell you that!)

Hahaha. Very direct sound person. Good lesson to learn, though.
