The theme of the month at the DIY Musician Blog is “Touring: How, When, Where, and Why.” Throughout July, we’ll be posting a number of articles on the subject, covering everything from booking strategies to couch surfing, from dietary advice to van maintenance tips.

But to kick things off on a fun note, we thought we’d ask you to share YOUR favorite touring stories. Favorite doesn’t necessarily have to mean “most pleasant.” We’re into the breakdowns, break-ups, broken gear, and broken dreams, too.

We’ll compile the best tales for an end-of-the-month recap (and include your band name and a link to your music). Please feel free to tell your stories in the comments section below.

I’m a solo chillwave artist, so my music is basically like 80s/90s music, the electronic pop side specifically. My gear includes a laptop for midi and drum control, Two synthesizers, one of which is connected to an effects pedal, and a lasershow and smoke machine.
Makes for a pretty rad show right?
I was doing a minitour through some cities in Utah.
For most of the venues it went really well, but there was one, it just so happened to be the last show on the list, where all sorts of things went wrong.
First of all, I wasn’t allowed to use my smoke machine, and thus my laser show wasn’t anywhere close to impressive. But hey, that’s not even the bad part.
Have you ever found yourself in a venue where the guys who ran the place didn’t know jack about that they were doing?
The only speakers that had my vocals running through them were my monitors. Nobody could hear anything I was saying, all they knew was that my act was a bunch of flashy lights and overpowering instrumentals.
As if it wasn’t bad enough, the guys from the venue tore my multieffect pedal’s power cable up, and I had to get a new one. Definitely the most humiliating thing that’s ever happened to me.
Now I find the whole thing hilarious, cause I know it probably won’t get any worse than that, haha
