Didn’t you say on the Podcast that Lady Gaga streamed a million tracks on Spotify and was paid $100 or something ridiculously low? I know you guy talk a lot about obscurity being worse than people stealing your music, or paying low prices for it. However, if Spotify becomes even bigger, what reason will people have to go to a store that sells your mp3s for more than a percentage of a cent? I’m trying to see what the benefit of being a part of it is. If I’m not on there people might turn to iTunes, or CDBaby where I get fairly compensated. If I am on Spotify, what reason would they have to buy it? Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks

We’re here to offer the most options to artists as possible when it comes to distribution. If you do not want to work with Spotify, that is totally fine. Just let us know, or opt-out of Spotify when you’re doing your initial signup. It’s there for those who want it, and for those who don’t, it certainly is not required.

That’s right. If you do nothing, you’ll get nothing. Every little bit counts in this economy. Go for it!!!!!

A penny per stream sounds really high, actually. If so, that’s great! Where did you see that? Rhapsody doesn’t pay nearly that much.

They are paying from 0.0004 to 0.0113 cents per stream, but I don’t know they criteria for the payment price.

I have my music on Spotify and yes it does pay a small amount per play, however it is another great way for people to discover your music and there is an option to buy so potentially you could be making sales from it. As an extra piece of marketing it’s an efficient tool and for the listener it basically works as a customisable radio station (free accounts have ads running in between tracks).

Lets face it; music fans don’t have to pay for music these days and most of them don’t, yet they’ll quite happily pay way over the odds to see their favourite artists play some crappy stadium or festival gig. The old days of having a couple of radio hit records and then retiring to a ranch in Colorado are over – that was yesterdays plan.

This is the new music business model and whether we like it or not that’s is the way it is and will be for the foreseeable future, so you gotta get with it – or get out of it!

It’s a bit… complex. Basically, the amount differs per stream because the payout rate is variable based on total revenue per month divided by total streams per month. But then you have to factor in that the payout rate is also different based on the type of sale: Free, Day Pass, Premium, Unlimited, and Mobile. Lastly, since they’re a European company, the amount you earn in USD changes every day based on the exchange rate. Thanks be to accountants!

I know this is a big debate now, but one thing to keep in mind is that Spotify and Rhapsody are very popular places for casual listeners to discover new music. They may be the type of person that is never going to buy music again, when they can pay for a streaming service. Or, they may not buy your music upfront, but could discover it through Spotify and become a lifelong fan.

Is there going to be any way to put certain track of a release on Spotify without issuing the whole cd? I’m all for letting people have 3 songs out of 9 song cd to listen to via streams, but I’m not sure that I want the whole cd made available in that medium.

Sorry. Nope. We deliver the entire album.
