Streaming Music Service Spotify Launches in the US

July 14, 2011{ 4 Comments }

Europe’s popular, free, on-demand streaming service is now available in the United States

It’s here! You can listen to as much music as you want, when you want, from your computer or smartphone, all for free. Though for now, Spotify is available in the US by invite-only. They’re offering a 3-tiered service, from free to Premium ($9.99 per month). CD Baby has a worldwide agreement with Spotify, so our catalog is included as part of this US launch. For full details, check out Spotify.com.

    Not yet. We’re still making some deliveries. I think with all the excitement, Spotify’s ingestion process might be a little… congested.

    Mike, yep. If you’re opted in for Spotify through CD Baby then your music will be available to Spotify customers of any/all tiers.

    The model is changing. The expectations of music consumers are changing. But money is still in the equation. With Rhapsody, listeners pay a subscription fee that supports the service, the artists, the labels, etc. With Spotify, there are subscription options at various tiers, and for the listener who uses the service for free, they have to listen to ads. So the ad revenue takes the place of the subscription fee when it comes to paying artists. I know the per-stream payment is low, but money is changing hands.

    Nope. No deal with them.
